The Occupational Therapy Journey That Helped a Hairdresser Regain Strength After Nerve Injury
Occupational Therapy Month is a time to highlight the power of OT in helping people reclaim their independence and quality of life. At Sol Physical Therapy, we’re proud to share real stories that demonstrate just how life-changing this kind of care can be.
Meet Kristin R., a hairdresser whose life was turned upside down by a nerve injury that left her unable to perform even the simplest daily tasks. Brushing her hair, buttoning a shirt, holding scissors—all became suddenly out of reach. But with the expert care and one-on-one support of Rachel Locke, OTR/L, CHT, Kristin began a journey of healing, one small step—and button—at a time.

From Frustration to Function
Kristin’s injury started with neurological complications that caused damage to her cerebellum and peripheral nerves. As her condition worsened, she began losing control and strength in her hands and arms—crucial tools for her career as a hairdresser.
“I couldn’t even grip things. I was dropping everything,” she recalled. “It was so frustrating—I couldn’t button my shirt or put my hair up. Things I took for granted every day.”
After being hospitalized and facing significant nerve damage, Kristin found her way to Rachel, an experienced occupational and certified hand therapist at Sol. Rachel guided Kristin through personalized exercises and home routines focused on rebuilding strength and coordination—starting with foundational movements and gradually layering in complexity.
Hands-On Healing, One Step at a Time
“Rachel taught me about all the muscles in my hand and how they work,” Kristin shared. “The rubber bands, the balls, even the putty—I didn’t like it, but it helped. And I did my homework, every day.”
With consistent therapy and a commitment to her exercises, Kristin began to see real progress. One major turning point? Buttoning her own shirt.
“Oh my God, the buttons. It sounds ridiculous, but I would cry out of frustration, not being able to button my shirt. Opening a jar, tying my shoes—those things were all so frustrating. But the moment when I finally could button my shirt, it showed me I was turning a corner.”

Back in the Salon
Just a couple months after starting therapy, Kristin made a triumphant return to the salon.
“I did a perm on a client. It took me 20 minutes longer than it used to, but I did it,” she said proudly. “And I called Rachel right after because I knew she’d get it. She’d understand how big that was for me.”
Kristin says what makes Sol different is the personal, goal-driven care she received.
“They don’t just set a timer and walk away. They hear you here.”
Advice for Others
For anyone on the fence about trying occupational therapy, Kristin offers this:
“I’d done therapy before, but it wasn’t like this. At other places, you’re just a number. But here, it’s one-on-one. They take the time to really help you—and it makes all the difference.”
Today, she’s back at work, feeling stronger, more confident, and deeply appreciative.
🧡 Happy Occupational Therapy Month from Sol Physical Therapy!
