What to Expect at Your First Physical Therapy Appointment

Starting physical therapy for the first time can feel daunting when you don’t know what to expect! Here is some helpful information to help you feel more prepared:

What to Bring

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow for easy movement. Bring your photo ID, insurance card(s), a referral from your doctor (if your insurance requires it), and any imaging or medical records related to your treatment.

Arrive 15-20 Minutes Early

Arriving early gives you time to locate the office, check in, fill out any necessary paperwork, confirm your insurance information, and change clothes if needed. Arriving late can add unnecessary stress to your experience and shorten your overall appointment time. If you’re running behind or having trouble finding the office, call the front desk to let them know!

During the Appointment

Your therapist will ask about the problems you’re experiencing, as well as any relevant medical history that may be contributing to the issue. They may also measure your range of motion or test your strength. (Keep in mind, these tests may provoke your symptoms, but your therapist will help you find relief before you leave.) Identifying mobility deficits allows your therapist to create a personalized plan of care tailored to your specific needs. Once that’s established, you will typically begin treatment during your first appointment. Finally, you will receive exercises and/or stretches to perform at home before your next follow-up appointment.
In total, you will spend approximately 45 minutes with your therapist, and there may be an additional 15 minutes with an exercise specialist after your appointment for modalities (heat, ice, e-stim, etc.) or more exercises.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions!

Maximize your treatment by communicating openly with your therapist. Ensure you fully understand your home exercise program so you can continue progressing between appointments. Also, discuss with your therapist how often they recommend scheduling follow-up visits.

If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to the clinic for more information. We are happy to assist in making you feel as comfortable and prepared as possible! We look forward to seeing you at your first appointment!
